Black ash oil print with suminagashi "fire" color split and overlaid with fiddlehead fern with horsetail oil print

I love how this turned out. This is a piece of Black Ash from an artist ecologist friend in Maine. Previously abundant, Black Ash, is threatened to be eliminated from its current range in the next few decades due to the emerald ash borer. This piece shows the resilience of a forest after a fire and I hope for that resilience for this species being destroyed by a pest that is thriving through warming temperatures. Black ash has been and still is important to  indigenous cultures for many uses including basket making. I think it is the only tree in North America that does not have fibers connecting the spring and winter wood so weavers are able to strip the hardwood winter growth rings from the weaker spring wood and make strong strips for weaving.
